    As our training team begins preparation to build our code of conduct course for 2021, we would like to benchmark with other companies on how they have structured or will be structuring their annual eLearning code courses.  Are you creating micro-learnings?  Game formats? Animated? Live Action? Comedy?

    We are looking see what you have found successful, what your lessons learned were and what your employee feedback was.  We would also be happy to share our experiences and plans as well.

    Ours is on our learning platform with a few test questions for validation. Personally I am against games etc we are supposedly dealing with adults and games are ridiculous

    It all comes down to content, what you need to get accomplish in my opinion as well as balance and your audience. Physicians for example generally aren't fans of gamification.

    Our current 2020 privacy training focuses on our Access & Confidentiality Agreement which is typically the basis for privacy disciplinary actions. We chose this topic in collaboration with HR and management because we want to make sure our employees understand confidentiality and the expectations around it such as safeguarding documents, access etc. We "gamify" to the extent that we have a section for example that discusses safeguards and then to test / reinforce the concept the user needs to take the safeguard card and drag and drop it in the "Yes this is a good safeguard pile" or "No this is not a good way to safeguard pile." We also chose to incorporate our corporate value symbols, which we call the Carilion "C's" and promote them with inspirational quotes related to each C from people like Warren Buffet. To me there is a way to gamify in a positive way that helps educate the learner reinforcing the content without making the content seem like a check the box and too silly lacking a level of seriousness.

    Our annual Code of Conduct online course is basically a voice over PowerPoint presentation in our LMS. There are "What would you do" questions sprinkled throughout the course and then a short quiz at the end. I too am looking to do something different this year to change it up and make it more engaging. Would love to hear about the format it has been offered at ConEd and also what others are doing.

    Of course you want to use the method that fits your staff in your environment. Of course the larger the group of people to train, the more true the adage that not everyone learns the same way. Some prefer the straight forward, no-nonsense type of training. Just the facts ma'am. This is what our annual HIPAA online training is.

    Then there are others that enjoy a little fun. Turn it into a game or a little competition and they are all over that. Create a crossword in October using compliance terms and a Halloween background, give out prizes. Some may think this is a waste. I believe doing anything that keeps HIPAA and compliance in general in peoples minds benefits all of us.

    And who says that a presentation has to be boring? I've made quite a number of PowerPoint presentations that are hilarious while making a point about compliance. I like to use "anonymous" actors pulled from our staff, playing out their roll. I share a presentation every few months or so. I usually set them up so that once the PowerPoint starts it goes to the end. Staff love seeing themselves or their fellow workers on screen. I've even had the CEO play a part. I've done videos on throwing out PHI, leaving PHI face up, locking your computer, talking too loud in the halls, taking care when entering data (especially emails), and on and on.

    I have used Kahoot where the audience has to punch in their responses on their smartphone and the results immediately showing on the screen. At the end it shows who got first, second, etc.

    Our online course software allows us to create our own courses which we do. It allows you to create quizzes to go along with the course. We even linked a course to YouTube to show an Active Shooter presentation.

    This, along with weekly security emails, quarterly security training, and intermittent random training via email, instructor led, department meetings, one-on-one, and any other way I can think of.

    The key is variety. Remember, if you make them think about compliance, maybe they won't violate compliance. Oh, and above all, have fun with it.
