Training requirements for "occasional" employees

I'm wondering what others have done about required training for "occasional" employees.  (Those that pick up a shift once every month or so or in some cases once every 6 months...)

Do you have requirements separate from what other employees are required to do?  Which trainings are mandated?  How do you define "occasional"?

    I appreciate the input!!

    Hi Emily,

    According to 29 CFR @ 553.309(b)(1)

"The term occasional or sporadic means infrequent, irregular, or occurring in scattered instances."  Not super helpful.

There is a decent article at https://www.hrassured.com.au/blog/what-is-casual-work/ that discusses "Casual Work" which I feel essentially falls into the same category here.

In my organization we don't have occasional employees, but we do contract with individuals who provide occasional services depending upon our needs. At minimum, we require contractors maintain all licensure and/ or certification(s) - this is verified periodically.  These contracts are usually 30-45 days in length for the entire year.

If you haven't done so already, you should check your policies to see if they cover this area.

    Hope this helped.

    Good Morning -

We don't differentiate training based on employee status (FT, PT, Casual).  Everyone attends New Employee Orientation (NEO) and annual trainings.  There are core and role specific trainings required.  Casual is defined as working less than 24 hours per week and must work at least one shift every 6 months.

    Have a terrific Tuesday!

Everyone goes through New Employee Orientation for general training. The individual departments provide specialized training for their respective areas. The education/training requirements are the same for PT, FT, and PRN (casual).

We require all types of employees to have the same training.  All new employees must attend new employee orientation and then complete the mandatory annual trainings, including PRN and temporary staff.
