I've found a few older threads that discuss the collection of SSNs at registration.  It seems as if some organizations have stopped collecting SSNs altogether.

Does your organization collect SSN as part of the registration process?  If not, how do you verify Medicaid eligibility?

Interesting. My firm works on the BA side for hospital patient accounts. If you want to find someone down the road who doesn't pay & sue them I'd be curious as to how people think they are ever going to find them? SSN is the main search tool in legal search databases.  As far as I'm aware due to name commonality you have to have an SSN to report to a credit bureau. Our SSN's our masked behind the scenes and only the last 4 show on our screens. Also we do a lot of activities that assist patients and SSN's are required.
