Passed CCEP

    Hi All,

Just wanted to share that I passed the CCEP exam today!  I'm so relieved.  I was extremely nervous about taking the exam (and during it) so I am grateful for the result.

I wanted to take the opportunity to say thanks to a few people and provide some encouragement to others who are preparing.  First, and foremost, to Cait and her study group.  If you are thinking about taking the exam at all, please do sign up for her study group.  It will help you structure your preparation, highlight key things to know and provide test-taking strategies.  During the exam, I kept reminding myself of Cait's tips for success -- focus on the keywords, stop the bleeding, stay in your lane, think of the functions that need to be involved and help manage the risk or the issue, and don't second guess yourself.  So a HUGE thank you to Cait for her initiative, guidance and dedication to supporting others in their journey to become a CCEP.

Another huge shoutout to Bill Wong as well.  I truly valued and reviewed his guidance on taking the exam and the preparation materials that he has shared with this group to study.  Definitely use that as another resource in your preparation and read through his thoughts after he passed the CCEP to help you.

As others have reported, the majority of the questions were scenario-based.  As noted above, the guidance from Cait and Bill was spot on to help prepare.  To further emphasize Cait and Bill's words of guidance, I definitely recommend that you:
    • know about attorney-client privilege
    • USSG, Chapter 8 -- as expected, came up frequently across the exam -- read it, study it, study the definitions and the language and then read it again and study your notes again
    • Risk assessment -- very prominent throughout the exam
    • The role of the Board of Directors in a compliance and ethics program
    • Specific regulations mentioned to note:
      • Yates Memo
      • False Claims Act
      • Fair Credit Reporting Act
      • HIPAA
      • FCPA
      • OSHA
      • Data Privacy and Info Security/IT Security were also included in several questions

I finished all the questions of the exam with 35 minutes left and then took those last 35 minutes to re-review questions that I had bookmarked.  With the review, I took the full time allocated to complete the test.

My method for prep included making an outline of all the guidance from Cait and each individual regulation, reading each outline item at least twice, taking notes and then re-reading and reviewing my notes.  I also read Compliance 101 cover to cover, took notes and highlighted the book and then re-read my notes and highlighted portions of the book at least twice, one of which was last night before my exam.  I did the same thing with the Ch. 8 sentencing guidelines, read it through several times, took notes and made index cards to study and then read through it again.   Bill's slides on the FSG were helpful as were the SOX ones (thanks again for sharing those, Bill).  I also thoroughly read and reviewed the Code of Professional Ethics, took notes and read through those notes ahead of the exam.

Another point to note, your experience working in compliance is invaluable in your success of the exam.  I took the exam for the first time in 2017 after attending the Basic Compliance & Ethics Academy and missed passing by just a few points at that time.  At that point, I was still a newbie in the compliance space and my experience was very introductory with not a lot of experience to many of the elements of a compliance program.  Now, with more experience under my belt, and some more knowledge, I feel that I was in a better position for passing the exam successfully this time around.  I still have areas that I don't have direct involvement with as part of my daily responsibilities but knowing where my shortcomings were, I further enhanced my study of those particular elements and re-read through my binder from the academy of those particular areas where I was less confident in my knowledge and experience.  Assess your own compliance knowledge and where you have gaps based on the detailed outline of the exam in the candidate handbook, hone in on those areas and study them to help you be better prepared to take the exam.  Also, take the practice exam on the Corporate Compliance website if you are taking the exam at a test center as I did.  It will help simulate what you will experience taking the exam at the test center and help you to become familiar with the navigation of the test on the computer.

Give yourself plenty of time to prepare for taking the exam.  I have been actively reading, studying and note taking and preparing every day since November/December and sometimes for several hours on the weekends.  I wish I could say that there is a magic number of hours to study to feel prepared but even with all the hours of studying these last several weeks, I was still nervous about my ability of passing.  So just set a target date, make time to read and prepare and go for it.  If you don't pass, you can always take away from that experience to learn where you are falling short, prep more and take the exam again.  Don't get discouraged, take a breather from exam prep for a little bit, then pick back up and dive back in.

Anyway, I just wanted to share some of my advice and experience with taking the CCEP with all of you and provide some encouragement to those who are preparing.  I wish everyone who is planning to sit for the exam all the best.

    Best wishes,

    Cindy

Congratulations Cynthia. Your recap was elaborate. I'm impressed. After I got through the CHPC test and seeing that I passed, it was like my mind shut down. I couldn't remember hardly any of the questions.

Thank you so much for sharing...I originally was hoping to study/take the exam last year and due to professional accountabilities, I just couldn't make it work.  Your note to the group has inspired me to put this back on my radar.  Thank you to this group for reminding me how important investing in oneself is...I appreciate and value each of you.  I look forward to participating in the next study group.

    Thanks again.

Thanks Lloyd! As far as tips, I would say that everything Cynthia wrote in the initial post on this thread is spot on. Other than that, everyone knows their best strategy for taking exams: Mine is that if I am stuck, I move on, and go to another question. The break from thinking about that tough one helps, plus sometimes something in another question jogs your memory just enough to help you figure that tough question out.

    Don't second guess.

Experience is helpful; I found I scored highest on the sections that I had more experience in. I did not score as well in the "Program Oversight" section as I did in say, "Risk Assessment" In fact, I lost most of my points in the Oversight section. Which makes sense to me, since oversight is more my boss's area of responsibility. So perhaps if you are studying, put a little extra effort into the areas that you do not normally handle at work.
