Does anyone in the community have tips and good resources for validating the credibility of educational institutions, specifically online institutions (in the US)?

    Many thanks,

    Lucy:
You will want to start with ensuring that a U.S. institution of higher education is accredited. See:
    http://www2.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/index.html

You can search a database of accredited institutions on this U.S. Department of Education webpage.
    http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/

Most accredited institutions receive their accreditation from one of the six regional agencies of accreditation, while certain programs (e.g., pharmacy) may have a separate accreditation process.  See: http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/Agencies.aspx

In addition to general accreditation, certain disciplines may also be accredited by specialized accrediting agencies.  See:
    http://www2.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/accreditation_pg7.html#NationalInstitutional

Distance and Correspondence Education also has special accreditation. See:
    http://www2.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/accreditation_pg10.html#Distance

Some academic disciplines also can voluntarily apply for accreditation or recognition from a well established body in the field, e.g., for programs of business - AACSB International-The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (http://www.aacsb.edu/en/about/) and for programs of applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology - ABET (formerly known as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology).

    Good luck.
