CCEP/CCEP-I Study Group Question 3 - Great work so far!

  • 1.  CCEP/CCEP-I Study Group Question 3 - Great work so far!

    Posted 07-11-2018 09:20 AM
Great work on questions 1 and 2 everyone! Here is another tricky one. Many of the questions on the exam have two answers that can usually be quickly eliminated while the two remaining options leave room for some doubt. This is what trips up a lot of people especially since there is limited time to think about each of the questions and select an answer during the timed test.

Which of the following BEST describes the primary role of a compliance and ethics professional?

    1. ensures that risks are appropriately prioritized
    2. performs background checks on new employees
    3. includes compliance and ethics questions in exit interviews
    4. promotes a culture of compliance and ethics throughout the organization

Post what you think the correct answer is and your reason for selecting it.

Lets try and get at least five responses, dare we hope for ten?

I would choose D.  Compliance and Ethics professionals are the moral compass of the organization.

D- this is the primary role, all other options are part of that role.  Thanks for doing this Cait!

Cait...I'm going to ask you if the following might be counted in hitting your 5 or 10 number...and that is for folks to offer their TWO final choices that they selected from.  This might open up the discussion a bit more.

    Thoughts?

I think discussing the two final choices after eliminating the two obviously incorrect ones is a great idea.

When I first looked at this question I narrowed it down to A and D. I think what makes this tricky is if your employing organization emphasizes in your job description or in practice that your role is to help identify, prioritize and mitigate risks. That would make it hard to choose the correct answer according to the view of the HCCA and SCCE which is that the compliance/ethics role is to promote a culture of compliance and ethics throughout the organization. As a compliance professional in both finance and healthcare, I was never told to specifically promote a culture of compliance, it was more about the tasks involved.

My approach to this question is the "biggest piece of the puzzle" approach...which is in some way related but not necessarily in the same way that is referred to as when people offer to pick the most correct answer...but there is some connection there.

For that reason...my selection is D and this is also a good exercise to read the question...pick your answer...and MOVE ON.  Remember...the clock is ticking.

I would definitely say the primary role of a compliance and ethics professional would be to promote a culture of compliance and ethics throughout the organization.  Answer choice D.

My reason for selecting D is because it gives an overview of the entire scope of what a professional in the compliance field would do and how it would impact the entire company.

Contrella...and by the way...love that name!

Let me ask you this as another way to possibly approach how to answer this question and perhaps others may jump in...the question asked for primary "role"...in my view, three of the answers were more related to "tasks" and only one, in my view, was what I would consider a "role"...so that answer jumped out when I read the options.

I select D because of the key phrase, 'throughout the organization' and key word 'culture'. Throughout the organization because that implies every area from top to bottom, left to right and when that is accomplished that creates a compliant culture.

I'm going to say D and that's because I would assume that the promotion of compliance and ethics throughout the organization encompasses the other tasks.

I removed B and C right off, as discrete tasks, not a "primary role"

Of the two remaining, selected D as A is also pretty discrete and not an overarching "role" which is what D gets at.

    Good question!

D is the best answer.  Promoting culture of compliance and ethics is a primary role - everything else is a part of that "promotion".  Thanks for posting these questions - they make you think.

I believe, the best response is "D" because a "culture of compliance" totally encompasses how the organization does business.

Eliminate B - This sounds like a task for the HR director or some manager, not the compliance and ethics professional (CEP).

Eliminate C - Though a CEP may help design exit interview questions relating to compliance and ethics, the HR director or perhaps some manager probably does the actual interviews, not the CEP.

    That leaves A and D.
Eliminate A - Though prioritizing risks is certainly an important task for the CEP, it feels a bit narrow. When compared against D, answer A withers in comparison.

Correct answer then must be D.

Based upon the answer choices I choose D.  It appears to be the most practical general option.  The other choices are specific and , although relevant, outside scope of c&e.

    A. Ensures risks are  prioritized is a big component of the role of a CEP as it helps them organized with what is the most important risk of their organization.

I would answer "D" in this case. That is the primary responsibility of a CEP. "B" and "C" are too specific and answer "A" is one of the responsibilities of Senior Management in conducting a CSA in each area of the organization. Compliance also applies a risk assessment procedures to evaluate the high risks that demand a special attention as well as Internal Audit. However this is not the most important responsibility of a CEP.

"D" is the best choice.  "C" can be easily eliminated since Compliance professionals do way more than contribute to an employees exit interview.

In analyzing this question which asks what "BEST describes the primary role" of a compliance officer, I would probably go with "D."

Option D.  Promotes a culture of compliance and ethics.  The other options are specific activities that could be performed by the Compliance Professional, but would not be the "primary" role.
