Doctor's Orders

By Marlene Allen posted 06-22-2010 10:15 AM

I have a question that I would like to pose concerning doctor's orders.  We have several physicians at our hospital that will note give us a written and signed doctor's order.  Our Registration Supervisor asked me yesterday if I could look into this and try and find some way to get all our doctor's to understand the importance of doctor's orders that are done correctly.  I know it is a compliance issue and we could get audited in this area but we  need to convince the doctors how important it is.  I look forward to your responses.

Hi Marlene- Not sure what state you are in but RAC and other federal and payer audits may ask for a return of funds to carrier if there are no "orders", if there are no signed orders, and or if the order does not specifically match the test performed. Here are some payer input policies that may help...search your medicare intermediary in your state and you will find what you need to justify you position.
